NaturaSi is an Italian supermarket chain focusing exclusively on the sale of organic products.  With over 40 stores in Italy and Spain, NaturaSi’s marketing director, Lucio Ceccarelli, in an interview with Planeta Orgânico, spoke about his innovative company model that favors the development of the organic sector. He is one of the speakers at the BioFach Conference, to be held in Rio de Janeiro, on September 25 and 26.  

 
PO - Has NaturaSi any criteria when accepting organic products for sale in its stores? How is this organized?
Ceccarelli -  NaturaSi’s sales points are organized in a franchise system which defines the precise sales formula and supplies each one with the marketing and support for their management. For example, purchase centralization, the use of software, and so forth. 
 
PO - How long has NaturaSi been in existence and how many stores do you have in Italy at present?
Ceccarelli -  The company was created in 1993 and has 39 stores in Italy and 2 in Spain. 
PO - Do you have any plans for the development of business in other countries?
Ceccarelli -  Yes, but only in Spain at the moment.  We could also consider the opportunity to transfer our franchise marketing and knowledge to other countries outside Europe.

 
PO - Do you also sell natural products in your stores? How do you see the development of the market for natural and organic products?
Ceccarelli -  We only sell organic products. Obviously, we are really positioned in favor of the development of the markets for natural and organic products, and we consider that the market will continue to grow, even if the growth rate is lower than in the last few years. We also place ourselves in the fight against GM products, as an argument in favor of greater consumption of organic products.
PO - How large are your stores on average and how many products are usually sold at the stores?

Ceccarelli -  They are approximately 350 sq. m. and there are about 4000 items in each. 

PO - Do you consider conventional supermarkets to be direct competitors?
Ceccarelli -  Not yet, or not fully, one could say. 
But we are paying great attention to the growing interest these chains have been showing in organic products.
