Know more about  organics

Fruits

Besides being tasty, we expect a fruit to be healthy, without damages caused by insects, diseases or inadequate handling. It should also have texture, juiciness, flavour and nutritional qualities. Above all, it should not be contaminated by chemical products that are potentially toxic for human beings. This would be the ideal fruit.
Though it seems difficult, at first, to find fruits that fulfill these requirements, they exist and can be found in all the orchards that follow the agroecological way of handling the production. To eat a fruit that is certified as organic is to have the pleasure and the assurance that one is consuming an ideal product in terms of quality. In itself, this is a powerful incentive to plant a genuinely "organic" orchard in our backyards.

For those who are thinking of planting a commercial orchard, however, it is advisable to study the local and regional markets first, in order to verify its commercial possibilities. In this case, the post-picking aspects of production (selection, packaging, storing, cooling, etc) are as important as the production itself.

As for handling practices, the ones that demand more knowledge are those referring to strategies of fertilization and the phytosanitary control of the orchard. The supply of nutrients through residues and organic compost is usually accompanied by the introduction of green manure or the handling of weed between lines, so as to assure the maintenance of organic matter in the soil. The methods of control of plagues and diseases that are approved by certifiers involve the use of syrups, vegetable extracts and practices of biological control. These techniques are still being developed for each one of the fruit species found in the different Brazilian regions. The production of pioneer areas, however, is already available in the market to meet part of the existing demand.

As far as commercialization is concerned, the export market is very attractive, being responsible for most of the national product’s sale. For the producer who can afford to invest in this market the perspectives of sales expansion are growing, inasmuch as European consumers want to increase the consumption of organic fruit, in search for better food quality.

But it is within the universe of street markets, specialized shops and supermarkets that most of the national production of fruits is consumed.  Although it is still hard to find organic fruit outside specialized markets, one has to recognize the immense potential these products have in Brazil. With such diverse regions and climates, Brazil can become the country with best possibilities of expanding the production in agroecological systems, not only of tropical fruits but also those of subtropical and temperate climates; not to mention regional fruits that are finding more and more consumers in the capitals and even abroad
